It wasn't until recently that I came to learn of this prophesy in Ezekiel and that this was the basis for the "third temple" that many said needed to be built in order to fulfill prophecy and bring in the in the Second Coming. The links above are very informative set of posts by Steve Gregg regarding the views of Ezekiel 40-48, the rationale for having those beliefs, and what I think is a very sound full-picture reasoning why it's more appropriate to take the view of the "third temple" to mean that the Israelites didn't take it fully to heart to make that full representation of the temple after their return from captivity.
Other views don't truly take into account the finished work of Christ, nor do they acknowledge that God should not be setting up a sacrificial system that he abolished in his Son, nor does he take pleasure in the act of animal sacrifices. As Steve Gregg said the above posts, "I don't think the writer of Hebrews would be cool with that."
God doesn't step backward in His plans.
